The Lodge
The Sneedsborough Lodge was constructed on February 9, 1871 in McFarlan, NC. The structure is 97’x 25’, and is made almost entirely of heart pine boards. The building originally served as a train depot and was located along the old Norfolk-Southern Railroad. The Depot was first moved in the late 1920’s north up the railroad to Morven, NC. The first move involved rolling the Depot down the railroad on round timbers, being pulled by a steam engine. The Depot was in service until the late 1960’s when the railroad was closed down, and the tracks removed.
On August 26, 2003 the Depot was moved for the second time. Highways were closed, and power lines and telephone lines were temporarily take down as the Depot was moved 5.5 miles away from the railroad and placed on a high hill overlooking the Pee Dee River Valley at Buchanan Shoals.
The renovation process was competed in an unprecedented 72 days, and The Sneedsborough Lodge opened its doors to Buchanan Shoal’s members on Friday November 7, 2003 (the night before the opening day of duck season). Upon completion of the renovations, the Sneedsborough Lodge has 3 bedrooms/3 baths, a large loft, laundry/mud room, full service kitchen, bar area, living/dining room, and has a wrap-around deck with an incredible view. The lodge will comfortably sleep 22 people.
All of the original wood remains in the building today. The 2.5” thick heart pine floors were taken up piece by piece, flipped over, sanded down, and sealed with a clear-coat finish. The walls in the bedrooms are paneled with original heart pine boards. The exposed ceiling joists that span the entire 25’ width of the building remained intact during the entire renovation process. Even the old cargo bay doors were used to make the two dining room tables that seat 16 people. It is one thing to have a first class lodge, but truly unique to have a first class lodge with history and character.
